The Wolf

Why not take a trip out to the woods to visit our wolf?

Wolves hold a special place in Welsh folklore and myth, and the vale Ffestiniog holds its own special wolf stories… Today Coed y Bleiddiau (Welsh for wolf’s wood) is the name of one of the station stops on the Ffestiniog railway line form Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog, it gets its name from an old story that it is the place where the last wolf in Wales was slain over 500 years ago.

The 7ft willow wolf sculpture was commissioned as part of a project with a local school in Blaenau Ffestiniog and can now be seen in its new home up by Coed y Bleiddiau station. Choose to see it by rail (trains run daily, for more information go to the Ffestiniog railway ) or on foot.

Go for a walk to see the wolf!

Meirionnydd’s oakwoods were once home to many wolves, and Coed y Bleiddiau is now home to a 7ft wolf! Don’t worry! This wolf is only a sculpture built from willow, but the old story goes that the last wolf in Wales was slain at Coed y Bleiddiau (Welsh for wolf’s wood) over 500 years ago!
